VIDEONALE.8
Foreword of the VIDEONALE.8 catalogue (excerpt)
[...] the Videonale has decided to include a first-ever selection of artist's CD-ROM productions from Australia, USA and Europe that illustrate the evolution of the still-young medium. The spectrum of approaches on display ranges from popular culture through complex forms of non-linear narrative to visual-art based conceptual works.
The exhibition is dedicated to artists based in the Rhineland, a region which, due in no small measure to the presence of Media Art Academy in Cologne and the Düsseldorfer Academy of Art, has become a centre for young media artists. Each of the six installations shows in different ways the artists pick up the output, ideas and images of others, and reflect these in their own work. Deconstruction, the appropriation of public images, sampling and historical references are all contributing factors. The young Brussel-based filmmaker Laurence Rassel is a special guest of the exhibition. Her "Roseware" project is a work-in-progress aspiring to participate directly in Marker's discourse on memory and recollection.
The "Artists Presentations" have been organized as a forum in which artists and audience can exchange ideas. Some insight into working in the new media can be gained on the basis of the projects and ideas presented by the artists.
A further Special is scheduled for Sunday, which happens to be polling day for the German Federal Parliament, and presumably the last election to this body in the present millennium. The artists' and media collective "XObjectspace" will be hosting their own unconventional election-day party running in the Kunstverein, Bonn, under the mottos "Vote for XObjects" or "Politicians in the Age of Their Reproduction".
We are particularly looking forward to the special programmes - a lecture on Polish video art organized by the ifa-galerie Bonn, the selection of young French artists video organized by the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Institut français Bonn and the Bureau des Arts Plastiques de Cologne, and the video installation "time passes" in the "Garage" by Nadja Schöning. [...] (Ute Hörner & Judith Ruzicka)
