VIDEONALE.5

Foreword of the VIDEONALE.5 catalogue

Now taken place for the fifth time, the Videonale as one of the most important Media Art Festivals aims at promoting an examination of the new technologies with special emphasis on aesthetic and multicultural aspects. At the centre of presentation will be the relation between Electronic Art and traditional arts as well as questions of artistic education. By expanding physically into the city and the region, a complex examination of Fine Arts became possible and the interests of a broader public could be met. In this respect the Bonner Kunstverein as the centre as well as the new Bonn Art Museum and the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany can be regarded as essential cornerstones. The Japanese and the French cultural institute in Cologne complete this list.
The "free competition" of the video art contributions, judged by a jury of experts, is the pillar of the festival. In reply to the worldwide invitation to participate, more than 400 tapes were sent in out of which a preliminary jury has chosen 129 tapes for the competition. The artistic quality of the works is very good and the share of young artists very high, a fact which can be explained by the generally improved education conditions. [...]
In cooperation with the new Bonn Art Museum the video center Ingrid Oppenheim with emphasis on video art of the 1970s will be presented and the video room of the Art and Exhibition Hall will be inaugurated with a retrospective of the 1980s consisting of five program blocks.
The video installations demonstrate the most important link with traditional Fine Arts. Thus 13 installations which hint at the relationship between sculptural works e.g. by Roos Theuws and the interaction of man and machine, shown in the works of Catherine Ikam and Agnes Hegedüs, will be the center of attention. [...]
A television programme corresponds to the electronic assimilation and presentation inherent in the new medium. It supports the organizer in his efforts to open video art to a broader public and, in the special case of the Videonale, to give it a clear profile. [...] (Axel Wirths)
