VIDEONALE.13

Foreword of the VIDEONALE.13 catalogue (excerpt)

27 years after its establishment, the Videonale is on solid footing. At more than 1700, the numbers of submissions to the open competition are higher than they have ever been. Artists from more than 70 countries sent their DVDs to Bonn, and for weeks on end diligent interns worked their way through the yellow parcel boxes, drawing up lists to prepare for the work of the jury. Because the films submitted tend to be longer and more complex, the entries selected present a host of topical themes at a very high level of sophistication. And still, every other year the question is re-raised as to wether a process such as this, and the exhibition it generates, are the best way to show video art - or if some other way to react to the Internet needs to be found. [...]

One conceptual innovation governing selections for the exhibition at VIDEONALE.13 is that for the first time the exhibits need not be single-channel videos. Multi-channel installations were explicitly permitted as well, provided they limited themselves to digital images and required no further material additions. This extension of (exhibition) space was accompanied by an implicit widening of the timeframe. [...]
The efforts, already very successful in years past, to present the Videonale not just with lectures and screenings abroad but with exhibitions as well, are continuing and being broadened. In the wake of smaller exhibitions held in Glasgow and Odessa and a large exhibition in Sarajevo in 2010 - where it was even possible to use the original presentation furnishing from Bonn - VIDEONALE.13 will already be shown in its entirely in May 2011 in Katowice, and in the winter in Taichung, Taiwan.
