Every Picture Is an Empty Picture

Christoph Faulhaber &

»Over fifty percent of our present is yet today medially generated. We are living in a world of images, paralysed by our own self-reflection, we are drowning in the enormousness of the surface«. What happens if you sit in front of a Burberry store, dressed in the internationally known Burberry Check, and beg? What happens if you apply for a grant whose subject is art and landscape, and you come up with a project where you drive your car round someone else’s field in the Schaumburger Land in order to create a motorway junction and, so to speak, make a drawing in the landscape? And what happens to this individual who founds a fictitious private security company called Mister Security and watches over an open street in front of the US Embassy in Berlin on behalf of the public? When does the camera become a weapon and the image become terror?

The collage of virtual reality, video clips and documentation positively drags the viewer into a torrent of pictures. A ball gets rolling. One question leads to another. Questions about the authenticity of these pictures and whether what they show is real. Boundaries become blurred. Scenes overemphasised by music. Scarcely anything tangible. An autobiography of the artist Christoph Faulhaber? (Valerie Schmidt)
