Foreword of the VIDEONALE.4 catalogue (excerpt)

Video art has been established within a certain area in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1990 the Videonale festival takes place for the fourth time, again designed as an international festival and competition, pointing out that video art has continuity and is well established. Even though the Videonale team has been forced to work under difficult conditions, the response and acknowledgement has been wide-spread and the professionalism of the organization unfaulting.

The second cooperation between the Videonale and the Bonn Arts Association is a sign that the medium of video has reached a significant position in the art world. The premiers of works from Poland, Norway, Finland, the Sowjetunion, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Israel and Greece show that the festival's reputation is expanding worldwide. Around 350 video tapes were submitted to the festival. Wellknown countries of video production in Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean region, South America, Canada, the USA and Japan represent their contemporary creative output. [...]

The first intention of the Videonale has always been to give an overview about artists' video production within the international context, and at the same time to present the most artistically advanced works. Therefore Videonale asked foreign curators from five European capitals to present programmes of current tendencies in video art from their own countries. Video artist Annebarbe Kaus has coordinated these thematic programmes, which include both lecture and screening. Danijela Puresevic, Micky Kwella, Marga Bijvoet, Michael Maziere and Jean-Paul Fargier will show video productions from the five European capitals Belgrad, Berlin-East, Den Haag, London and Paris. At this point we'd like to thank the Institut français, Cologne, and the British Council, Cologne, for material support.

In addition to the festival programme an exhibition with video installations will be shown inside the space of the Bonn Arts Association. Five young video artists from the Netherlands, the GDR, the FRG, Great Britain and Austria will present their works. These installations will give the audience an insight into more expanded uses of contemporary video art.
