Foreword of the VIDEONALE.11 catalogue

What comes first in a project like Videonale - now in its eleventh edition - which started out in 1984 as a student initiative? Following the appointment of the artistic direcotr and endeavours to secure financial support, the key focus of the curatorial work lies on the character and the positioning of this event. Given that the Videonale takes place only once every two years, it acts not least of all as a measure of changes in contemporary video art.

In the run-up to the Videonale, one concern is the compilation of a varied and lively festival programme directly following the opening ceremony, which will attract as many visitors aas possible from the national and international video art scene - besides the festival's local audience. On the other hand, since the Videonale took up quarters in the Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2004, it has tried to orient its programme selection not only within the limited scope of perception typical of festivals but also to lodge it in a further artistic context as an exhibition that is truly >fit for a museum<. To this end there are plans not only to promote the Videonale through accompanying academic lectures but also to present it as an exhibition - in somewhat reduced format - in Seoul and Bangalore. Besides the familiar >black box<, a more suitable form for presenting video art has yet to be found or at least to have gained acceptance. This is why showing and testing various new presentational possibilities has proved such a great opportunity and central feature at VIDEONALE.11 and also at the last two Videonale events, all the more so since the Kunstmuseum Bonn's impressive architecture designed by Axel Schultes offers such richly varied proportions - even if, or rather because, the building was in fact deisgned to show painting.
